Summer Camp Planning - Mesozoic III - Cretaceous

Please note, if you have arrived at this post out of chronological order, that this is part of my overall From Lava to Life summer camp planning.

At the bottom of the post I've updated with the actual lesson notes after teaching it... if you find my brainstorm-jumble frustrating, I hope this added information will help! Please feel free to contact me with any questions!

Planning:

    read Cretaceous book from

fossils from collection: gastropod, brachiopod, pelecypod, turritella

here we are with flowering plants at last - angiosperms

    printmaking with water soluble pastels

seed collage artwork - like the CD case idea

    beautiful collection of seed pods

seed matching - seed with final plant?

graph of how many flowering plants there are now -- Becca turned this circle graph into a bar graph and it was very effective

silk flowers used in some kind of display? it would be nice if this museum used up odds and ends of craft supplies!

inland seas - look at where Illinois was

    T. Rex

ancestors of magnolia - we have a magnolia in the back yard and can maybe do something with that? and the maple -- we could plant mine (oh, so that's why I have been delaying planting it all this time...)

many new insects - butterflies, ants, termites, bees
this is the place for my awesome collection of butterfly rubber stamps, pigment pads

placental mammals - have a doula come with a placenta???

THE KT EVENT - this would be fun to do in a graphic novel / comic book form

70% of the ocean species and 15% of the land species became extinct

Modern birds, descendents of the dinosaurs, are all that remain of the giant animals that had ruled the planet for so many millions of years.

baby bird! Baby Bird from Time of Dinosaurs Found Fossilized in Amber
headline from TODAY - WOW - incredible!
this will make the kids so excited about my amber when we get to that point
